Collagen Timing: When to Take It for Skin, Joints, and Recovery

Ask ten people when to take collagen and you'll get ten answers. Morning coffee. Post-workout. Right before bed. Empty stomach for absorption. With vitamin C. In your smoothie. Follow-up work has largely reinforced this. A 2024 dose-response study in resistance-trained young men found that consuming 30 g of hydrolyzed collagen produced significantly greater collagen synthesis response after resistance exercise than 15 g, which in turn was greater than placebo.[2] More is better, up to a point.

A 12-week trial in middle-aged men found that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation combined with resistance training enhanced patellar tendon adaptations (stiffness and cross-sectional area) more than resistance training alone.[3] Similar effects have been reported in athletic populations.[4]

A systematic review of collagen peptide supplementation for joint recovery and exercise concluded the evidence supports collagen for reducing joint pain in athletes and enhancing recovery from soft-tissue injury, particularly when timed near exercise.[5]

The Skin Research (and Why Timing Doesn't Really Matter)

A meta-analysis of 26 randomized controlled trials involving 1,721 patients found hydrolyzed collagen supplementation significantly improved skin hydration and elasticity compared to placebo.[6] A separate meta-analysis of 19 RCTs in 1,125 participants confirmed favorable anti-aging effects after roughly 90 days of daily supplementation, including improved hydration, improved elasticity, and reduced wrinkles.[6]

The doses used ranged from about 1 to 10 g per day, with typical studies at 2.5–10 g/day for 8 to 12 weeks. No study we're aware of has shown that morning-vs-evening dosing produces different skin outcomes. The takeaway: pick a time that helps you remember to take it every day, and stick with it.

Pre-Workout vs Post-Workout vs Anytime

Pre-workout (30–60 min before loading)

Best evidence-backed timing for tendon and ligament adaptation.[1] The Shaw protocol used 1 hour before exercise. Blood amino acid levels peak around this window, so the connective tissue is exposed to peak collagen precursors right when it's being loaded and taking up nutrients.

Post-workout

Reasonable but not optimal for tendon adaptation. The 72-hour window of elevated collagen synthesis after a dose[1] means post-workout collagen still supports recovery, it just isn't specifically timed to the loading stimulus.
